It is time for the world to recognize that the struggle against terrorism is not winnable unless adjusted to reality.
Terrorism
 survives because it is a faceless force: it is elusive, ever changing, and capable at will to inject and to extricate itself any time at any place. It is the nearest likeness to all-encompassing hydra.

Reality demands that terrorism be reduced to tangible and practical limits. This can only be accomplished when terrorism is recongized as an exisiting state.

The difference is it must be cast as an undesirable or rogue entity -anti state - always destructive of all other states: the equivalent of matter vs. anti-matter.

This approach provides the lawful grounds on which the family of legitimate nations will be able in collective effort to effect the desired results.

The history of Earth covers approximately 4.567 billion years (4,567,000,000 years), from earth's formation out ot the solar nebula to the present. This article presents a broad overview, summarizing the leading scientific theories. Due to the diffculty of comprehending very large amounts of time, the analogy of a single 24-hour period will be used, beginning exactly 4.567 billion years ago, at the formation of earth, and ending now. Each second of this period represents approximately 53,000 years. The Big Bang and origin of the universe, estimated at occurring 13.7 billion years ago, is quivalent to taking place almost three days ago-two whole days before our clock began to tick.

So they undid what has already happened for their personal gain and created paradoxes that we could not explain in a rational way.

They took us to a new level of reality that was not right. It took away our free will and SPELLBOUND us and them. They got caught in their own messes and couldn't get out either and they were to embarrassed and scarred to tell me.

We were stuck inside someone's mind for an unknown amount of time. I remember watching my plants shadows from the night light and they would move across the room in the dark. She was closing the lid on her box which we were in and this caused this effect.

Also I would walk around the neighborhoods and I noticed in the middle of each block only 1 Porch light would be on. Block after block it was like this. And every yard was perfectly kept. It was like someone was keeping house of the whole town.

We were in a Twlight Zone.

After studying her patterns I was able to get us out.

The powers they were playing with are used to create planets in the Universe. So they had no idea of the level of chemicals they were dealing with.

It wasn't enough that they were stealing the ORMUS from now it is being produced and I can only guess who its profiting from this.

How Enki surrendered to the Earth Mother and Queen



‘Enki and Ninhursag’ is perhaps one of the most difficult Mesopotamian myth for Judeo-Christian Westerners to understand, because it stands as the opposite of the myth of Adam and Eve in Paradise found in the Old Testament Bible. Indeed, ‘ the literature created by the Sumerians left its deep imprint on the Hebrews, and one of the thrilling aspects of reconstructing and translating Sumerian belles-lettres consists in tracing resemblances and parallels between Sumerian and Biblical motifs. To be sure, Sumerians could not have influenced the Hebrews directly, for they had ceased to exist long before the Hebrew people came into existence. But there is little doubt that the Sumerians deeply influenced the Canaanites, who preceded the Hebrews in the land later known as Palestine’ (Kramer, 1981:142). Some comparisons with the Bible paradise story: 1) the idea of a divine paradise, the garden of gods, is of Sumerian origin, and it was Dilmun, the land of immortals situated in southwestern Persia. It is the same Dilmun that, later, the Babylonians, the Semitic people who conquered the Sumerians, located their home of the immortals. There is a good indication that the Biblical paradise, which is described as a garden planted eastward in Eden, from whose waters flow the four world rivers including the Tigris and the Euphrates, may have been originally identical with Dilmun; 2) the watering of Dilmun by Enki and the Sun god Utu with fresh water brought up from the earth is suggestive of the Biblical ‘ But there went up a mist from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground’ (Genesis 2:6); 3) the birth of goddesses without pain or travail illuminates the background of the curse against Eve that it shall be her lot to conceive and bear children in sorrow; 4) Enki’s greed to eat the eight sacred plants which gave birth to the Vegetal World resonates the eating of the Forbidden Fruit by Adam and Eve, and 6) most remarkably, this myth provides na explanation for one of the most puzzling motifs in the Biblical paradise story - the famous passage describing the fashioning of Eve, the mother of all living, from the rib of Adam. Why a rib instead of another organ to fashion the woman whose name Eve means according to the Bible, ‘she who makes live’? If we look at the Sumerian myth, we see that when Enki gets ill, cursed by Ninhursag, one of his body parts that start dying is the rib. The Sumerian word for rib is ‘ti’ . To heal each o Enki’s dying body parts, Ninhursag gives birth to eight goddesses. The goddess created for the healing of Enki’s rib is called ‘Nin-ti’, ‘the lady of the rib’. But the Sumerian word ‘ti’ also means ‘to make live’. The name ‘Nin-ti’ may therefore mean ‘the lady who makes live’ as well as ‘the lady of the rib’. Thus, a very ancient literary pun was carried over and perpetuated in the Bible, but without its original meaning, because the Hebrew word for ‘rib’ and that for ‘who makes live’ have nothing in common. Moreover, it is Ninhursag who gives her life essence to heal Enki, who is then reborn from her (Kramer, 1981:143-144).

After Time had come into being and the holy seasons for growth and rest were finally known, Dilmun, the pure clean and bright land of the living, the garden of the Great Gods and Earthly paradise, located eastward in Eden, was the place where Ninhursag-Ki, the Earth Mother, Most Exalted Lady and Supreme Queen, could be found. There she lived for a season during the Wheel of the Year, when the Earth lay deep in slumber before the onset of Spring, in the land that knew neither sickness nor death or old age, where the raven uttered no cry, where lions and wolves killed not, and unknown were the sorrows of widowhood or the wailing of the sick. And it was in Dilmun, at that time that Enki, the wise god of Magic and the Sweet Waters, the Patron of Crafts and Skills, met, fell in love and lied with the Lady of the Stony Earth, Ninhursag-Ki.

The Earth Mother’s kiss did change the carefree and sexy Sweet Waters Lord: Ninhursag had wholly captivated him through the most profound of all bonds, the thread of enchantment and passion called Love. So profound the feeling was that the God of Sweet Waters, Magic and Crafts proposed to Ninhursag, with the enthusiasm of a young lover’s heart.

Ninhursag looked around the land, her stony body, and remembered the taste of the wondrous moisture of the Sweet Waters God within herself. She wondered whether the land should not feel the same loving touch without. She said then to Enki:

‘I heard your heart speak, Enki dearest. But if I feel your wondrous moisture within me, I look at the earth of Dilmun, also my body, and feel its longing for the gifts that you, dear heart, for sure can bring. Thus I ask you: what is a land, what is a city that has no river quay? A city that has no ponds of sweet water?’

Taken by surprise, Enki realized that indeed he had given his whole essence to the beloved, but forgotten to look after her Earthly Body, the land. He then rose to the challenge of providing water for the land with aplomb. He replied:

‘For Dilmun, the land of my lady’s heart, I will create long waterways, rivers and canals, whereby water will flow to quench the thirst of all beings and bring abundance to all that lives’

Enki then summoned Utu, the Sun God and Light of the Day. Together, they brought a mist from the depths of the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. Then Enki and Utu created waterways to surround the land with a never-ending source of fertile Sweet Waters, and Enki also devised basins and cisterns to store the waters for further needs. From these fertile sweet waters flow the four Great Rivers of the Ancient World, including the Tigris and the Euphrates. Thus, from that moment on, Dilmun was blessed by Enki with everlasting agricultural and trade superiority, for through its waterways and quays, fruits and grains were sold and exchanged by the people of Dilmun and beyond.

Ninhursag rejoiced in Enki’s mighty prowess and said to him:

‘Beloved, the powerful touch of your sweet waters, the essence of Mother Nammu that lies deep within you, transformed the land, my stony body. I feel the power of life throbbing within to be revealed without upon my surface as I give joyously birth and sustenance to the marshes and reed-beds, that from now on will shelter fish, plant, beasts and all that breathes. Thus I call myself Nintur, the lady who gives birth, the Womb of the Damp Lands by the riverbanks.’

Enki replied:

‘Ninhursag, dearest Nintur, beloved, how can anyone quite compare to you? I cannot resist your wild, sweet ways, so lie with me one more time and fill my body, heart, soul and mind with endless delights! For me you will forever be my fierce Damgalnunna, my Great Spouse, passionate and very much loved!’

Ninhursag laughed and welcomed the eagerness of the Sweet Waters Lord. Nine days later, the Great Goddess gave birth to a lovely girl without the slightest travail or pain. The girl was called Ninsar, Lady Verdure, the Mistress of Vegetation, the green carpet of grass, leaves and flower beds that cover the surface of the earth.

Enki was overjoyed with the birth of his and Ninhursag’s child:

' How perfect, how lovely is our Ninsar! I love already the woman in the girl-child, the young Anunnaki goddess and Mistress of Velvet Meadows and Green Fields. The ties that bind me to Ninsar are strong and tempered by an even greater love, for in her face I see also Ninhursag’s, the one and only to my wandering heart.’

The Great Lady, holding Ninsar in her arms, kissed Enki in the mouth, and said:

‘Soon my time to leave Dilmun will come, but to this holy land I will sure return at the beginning of the earth’s rest in the Middleworld. I need to leave, for without my loving touch Spring cannot come back, the winds to dismiss Winter won’t blow, all there is won’t sing or mate until I invite them to return. But before I go away, I endow Ninsar with the power to grow in record time, and in holy Dilmun I’ll leave my youngster daughter safe and sound from any illness, hatred or harm.’

As the Great Lady had declared, nine days later Ninsar was fully grown, charming and graceful, a sight to behold. Ninhursag then left for the Middleworld. Enki knew he would miss his beloved terribly, but while she was busy in the Middlearth giving her Essence for the land to grow happy and gay, equally busy was Enki in holy Dilmun. It was his sacred duty to oversee the rise and fall of all fertilizing waters that flowed from Dilmun to feed the rivers, lakes and ponds of the Middleworld to make the land ready to receive the Spring seeds. Thus, as much as he missed Ninhursag, Enki knew he could not leave Dilmun before all waterways were filled to ensure that the people would have plenty of water to grow their crops. Enki’s essence, the fertilizing power of the sweet waters, should reach every piece of land in the Middleworld that had been worked and ploughed.

It was at the end of a day he had spent totally absorbed by the mighty task of controlling the water flow to the Middleworld that Enki saw Ninsar walking on her own along the marshlands. Indeed, a lovely goddess she had become, and Enki’s eyes fell on the Maiden’s. Deep within the Sweet Waters Lord felt a longing he could not as yet define. He only knew that after Ninhursag’s departure, no other maiden had touched his heart the way this one did. Indeed, she who walked on her own along the marshlands was the closest version to Ninhursag his eyes had the luck to find. Enki did not lose time and immediately started wooing the young lady, encouraging her to love him wildly by the riverside.

Curious and eager as Ninsar was to experience the power of love in her body, mind, soul, and heart, she, the young goddess of Green Fields and Luscious Meadows, yielded to the Sweet Waters Lord, and together they made wild love.

But when morning came, Enki looked into Ninsar’s eyes and found her a loving, but pale portrait of Ninhursag.

‘What is in her that was so alluring last night, but now in the broad day light seems to have lost substance? Lovely as she is, she is not the one I surely miss’, thought Enki.

Despite the doubts he felt deep inside, Enki stayed with Ninsar for a while, because he knew his seed could be her womb. So he stayed with her until the ninth day, when Ninsar gave birth to Ninkurra, another girl-child, the future goddess of Mountain Pastures.

As before, Enki rejoiced at Ninkurra’s loveliness, at her cheerful smile and sweet face. Again, Enki saw in Ninkurra twice the mark of his beloved Ninhursag.

Sadly, Ninsar realized that although she had been passionately loved by Enki for a time, there was a longing in his eyes, his body, soul and mind she could not satisfy.

‘Bonded to him I for a time was,’ thought Ninsar,’ but he does not want me for myself, this I can tell. Mine is not the mind, body, soul and heart that holds his for a minute that means eternity, so I’ll let him go, now and forever. I need to be loved for who and what I am, and not to be a mere replacement for whom I know not he loves.’

Thus, when Enki left her and young Ninkurra, Ninsar grieved deeply, but found hope, meaning and sustenance in drawing from her all-one-ness, her inner and outer resources to heal and grow with the experience. She also kept a watchful eye on Ninkurra, who, like herself, grew in record time. Lovely, resourceful Ninkurra demonstrated enormous energy by climbing the highest heights, up to the mountain tops, but also keeping her essence tied to the ground. This way Ninkurra, the Goddess of Mountain Pastures grew safe from all hatred or harm.

Another nine days passed by, and as Ninkurra played at a mountain top, curiosity led her to explore a well that surfaced out of the blue to water the greens and wild flower beds she had just made grow. To her sheer surprise and delight, the well took the shape of a handsome god, who introduced himself to her as Enki the Sweet Waters Lord.

Again, Enki looked at Ninkurra’s young and cheerful face, and desired to dive into the maiden’s embrace, for she reminded him twice of Ninhursag, the one and only to Enki’s wandering heart. The maiden at the mountain top though had attracted the Sweet Waters’ Lord. Had he again fallen in love?

Ninkurra, who had lived a life so sheltered at the mountain heights, was fully bewitched by the easy charm of the older, more experienced god. Thus she joyously yielded to him and love they made for nine days and nine nights. But Enki soon realized that as lovely as Ninkurra was, she could not be compared to Ninhursag.

As before, the Sweet Waters Lord left Ninsar after nine days, when Ninkurra gave birth to another lovely girl-child called Uttu, the Spider, the Weaver of Patterns and Life Desires.

But Ninhursag, having kissed the earth to awaken for Spring to come, had returned to holy Dilmun. The Great Lady who saw and wisely judged all life forms, frowned at the sadness reflected in Ninsar’s and Ninkurra’s eyes, and frowned at Enki’s unbridled lust. Ninhursag knew how charming Enki could be, but no matter what, young Uttu the Weaver should be advised to avoid the riverbanks, or the places where Enki and herself could be found alone or unchaperoned:

‘Daughter Uttu, beware of the marshes and the riverbanks, where Enki, the Sweet Waters god, reigns as Sovereign. There he will see you, there he will desire you and want to make of you his own, only to leave you all alone later on!’, was Ninhursag’s stern advice to Uttu.

For a time young Uttu did follow the Great Lady’s advice and kept her distance from Enki’s lusty sight. But one day Enki’s desire won the young goddess’ heart, when he brought to her delicacies from the garden of delights: apples, cucumbers and grapes, all this and more Enki offered to the young goddess. Then Uttu, full of joy, opened herself to welcome Enki, the crafty god, and he embraced her with heartfelt glee, lying in her lap content and happy. Loving strokes, kisses and hugs they shared, until Enki’s seed found its way to Uttu’s young and yet untried womb.

Later, still lying on Enki’s powerful arms, doubt entered Uttu’s mind, body and heart:

‘Tonight you loved me so dearly, tonight I was your spouse, the one and only, your dearest, ‘ she thought . ‘ But will you love me in the morning, o lustiest of all gods? Will you stay in my arms and never let me go? And will you love for more than a holy night, and share with me happy and hard times?’

The Thief of Uruk

A story about Ancient Sumer

I knew him. His name was really Shugat-Nergal.

But everybody called him the Thief of Uruk. In all Sumer, there was no criminal more daring - or more clever.

I know. I’m a watcher at the marketplace for the traders’ association called the Karum. My name is Denisha-Ishtar. As you can tell by my name, my mother was Amurru. Amorite. She was raised on the desert in a tent. One day she rode into Uruk with a donkey train, met my father, married him and stayed. Then she had me.

Uruk verges on the desert. They call it Rainbow City because of half-breeds like me who live there. We’re not popular. So I grew up on the waterfront, hanging around the quay, meeting sailors and traders plying the Euphrates. Most belonged to the Karum. I learned from them and was damned lucky I didn’t get pregnant. What the hell. When I could stand it no longer and decided to get a decent job, I went down to the Karum to sign up.

“You’re but a girl,” one of the examiners informed me. “This is a man’s world. What can you do for us?”

I was prepared for him. I knew I would have to have some special talent to be accepted. So I had developed one. “Observation,” I told him. “With my keen eye, I’d be a good watcher. I know the Uruk Market. I’d make you a great undercover watcher in the marketplace.”

“By the gods!” that examiner exclaimed. “She’s got a point! Who’d suspect a girl of being our watcher in the market?” He enthused the others so they signed me up on the spot. Yata. Like that, I became a member of the Karum and a watcher. Once in a while, being a girl has its advantages.

When my mother heard I’d joined the Karum and intended to walk the streets of the marketplace, she thought I’d taken up prostitution. “I am not a whore,” I said. “But I’m not going to argue about it.” So I left home and that was that.

Like most Sumerian women, I dress comfortably: sandals, a necklace with my personal seal and a single-strapped wool shift that leaves my right breast uncovered. My breast is well-shaped and attracts a lot of attention. It distracts men, especially the young ones, and that gives me the chance to be a better watcher.

Like I mentioned, Shugat-Nergal was a master thief. I knew his favorite territory was the Uruk market. The first time I saw him operate, I couldn’t believe my eyes. He was walking down the street when he stumbled and brushed against a table of necklaces in a jewelry stall. “Sorry,” he apologized to the vendor. But I had my eye on his hand and saw three necklaces disappear into his kilt. I charged over to accuse him, but he disappeared before I could reach him. He had vanished, leaving me confused.

The next time, I caught sight of him as he entered the market gate. I was headed towards him when he pulled his stumble trick again and fell against another merchant’s table. He lifted another handful of necklaces and stuck them in his kilt. I took out after him. He saw me coming and hardly had time to apologize to the merchant before he took off. As he ran, I saw him pull off his kilt and toss it under a table in an empty stall.

I was amazed to see all the stuff he was wearing underneath his outer kilt, one of those gaudy colored kilts the Amurru love so much. He went into what seemed to be an act. He slumped his shoulders, ruffled his hair and changed his brisk gait to an awkward shuffle. By the gods! Before my eyes, he remade himself into what looked like a drunk Amurru driver from one of the donkey trains.

I easily caught up with him and tapped him on the arm. “I saw those necklaces you took from that merchant’s table back in the market,” I told him.

He turned around and looked at me with unfocused eyes. “Wha’ I did back there?” His body weaved in the air and I thought for a moment he was going to fall. “Miss, if I bumped you, I am shorry. Shorry. Deeply shorry. Miss, I apologize all over the place,” he said and knelt down in front of me.

“Don’t put on a show with me!” I told him.

He looked up at me with the most distressed eyes I’d ever seen on a man. I must say he was one hell of a good actor. “Wha’ show?” he asked throwing out his arms. Immediately, he lost his balance and toppled over on the brick pavement.

Several passersby stopped. “Is he drunk?” one in a robe of bleached wool asked. “Should I call a watchman?”

“By all means,” I replied. “This man is a thief. He’s stolen necklaces from a merchant’s table.”

The man started shouting “Watchman! Watchman!” while I stared at the face of the master thief lying on his side in the street. He was looking up, gurgling and rolling his eyes at me.

A watchman arrived. “All right, all right, what’s going on here? What seems to be the matter? A domestic quarrel, eh?”

The watchman’s remark infuriated me. “I don’t even know the damned man!” I informed the officer. “Besides, he’s a thief. I watched him steal necklaces off a merchant’s table here in the marketplace.”

“Is that so?” The watchman turned to Shugat-Nergal lying on the street in his gaudy kilt. “What’s the matter with you?”

“I think I had too mush to drink,” the thief gurgled.

“Well, get up,” the watchman said. “You look disgusting lolling around down there.”

“Yes, shir.” Shugat-Nergal clambered to his feet with no little difficulty and then stood stiff before us, his body weaving. He accidentally bumped the watchman. “Shorry.”

“This woman says you took necklaces from a merchant’s table in the marketplace. What have you to say about that?”

Shugat-Nergal held up his hands and rolled his eyes again. “I haven’t anything on me,” he said. “Shee for yourself.” By the gods, I had to admit, he was a fascinating actor.

The watchman felt around the thief’s kilt. “Where’s your moneybag, man?”

“Drank it. Drank it all up.” He put his face in the watchman’s face. “Can’tcha tell?” he asked.

The watchman flinched but stood his ground. “I didna take anything. I am not a thief,” Shugat-Nergal went on. “Thish woman — she owes me an apology, a great big one.”

The watchman turned back to me. “You said you saw this man take necklaces from a table in the marketplace, ma’am?”

“I did. He took them and stuffed them into his kilt.”

The watchman turned back to the accused again. The thief undid his colored kilt and whipped it off, standing stark naked in the marketplace like some slave. He flapped his kilt in the air. “Nothin’s in it,” he said and offered it to the officer.

The watchman took the gaudy kilt and carefully examined it. He turned back to me. “I find nothing in his kilt, ma’am.”

It was more than I could stand. “For god’s sake, give him the damned thing back and tell him to put it on. I tell you, officer, I saw him take necklaces from a merchant’s table. If you’ll come with me into the marketplace, I’ll show you.”

The watchman told Shugat-Nergal, “You come along with us.” They accompanied me back inside the marketplace.

I marched them up to the table where I had seen him take the necklaces. The merchant behind the table looked up hopefully as we approached, but his face turned grim as soon as he noticed the watchman’s harness. “Sir,” the officer asked the merchant, “are you missing some necklaces?”

The merchant nodded. “Unfortunately, yes. Three, I think ... a carnelian and two very expensive lapis.”

“This woman claims she saw this man take necklaces from your table.”

The merchant stared at Shugat-Nergal, shook his head and sighed. “I wish it were so, officer,” he said, “but I have to tell you, I’ve never seen this man before.”

“How can you say that?” I asked. “I saw this very man stumble and fall against your table less than a quarter hour ago.”

The merchant nodded. “Ma’am, someone did stumble and brush against my table, but it wasn’t him. Look at that god-awful kilt he’s wearing. I wouldn’t let anyone in a kilt like that get close to my goods.” He leaned forward. “You know, ma’am,” he whispered to me, “I think he’s Amurru.” I felt my face burn.

Shugat-Nergal chose this moment to come alive. “Shee!” he exclaimed. “She owes me a great big apology!”

“No!” I cried. “Look at his face,” I urged the merchant. “When he left the market, he pulled off an outer kilt he was wearing and threw it under an empty table. That gaudy kilt he’s in now is a disguise that he was wearing under his kilt. Pay attention to his face.”

The merchant took a close-up look at Shugat while he continued to weave. I’d swear Shugat was suppressing a smile. “Looks drunk as hell to me,” the merchant said. “I smell beer on his breath.”

“By Nin!” I exclaimed. “Come with me. I’ll show you!”

The merchant shook his head. “Can’t leave my table.”

“That’s all right, sir,” the watchman put in, “the accused and I will accompany this woman.”

I led them back the way Shugat had run out of the marketplace, passing two or three empty stalls on the way, including the one with the table I thought he had pitched the kilt under. I looked under it. There was nothing there. To be sure, I got down on hands and knees to search, figuring the kilt might have slid further back.

When I got back up, I conceded defeat. “There seems to be nothing here now.”

The watchman raised his eyebrows and turned to Shugat-Nergal. “It seems this woman was mistaken. Do you wish to make a charge, sir? Perhaps a charge of slander?”

Shugat-Nergal straightened up and looked me straight in the eye. He seemed to have made a rapid recovery from his drunken stupor. I held steady and didn’t flinch. “Not if she’ll retract those nasty things she said about me. And apologize. Nicely … like a lady.”

GRRR. It was one of the hardest things I had ever done. I gritted my teeth. “I cannot produce the missing necklaces,” I said. I turned to Shugat-Nergal. “I must have dreamed the whole thing. I apologize to you, ... sir.”

Shugat smiled and turned to the watchman. “She’s apologized, officer,” he said. “We all make a mistake now and then, but it’s over. There’s no longer any problem.”

“So it seems,” the officer said and turned to go back to his post at the market gate.

As soon as the watchman left, Shugat turned his attention back to me and his face broke into the grin I’d been watching him suppress. “You’re quite the woman,” he told me.

“And you’re quite the thief,” I replied. “This is the second time I’ve watched you operate.”

“The second time - ?”

“I’m an undercover watcher for the Karum here at the market,” I said.

Shugat nodded. “Ah,” he said, “then you know who I am?”

“Indeed!” I said. “You are the notorious Shugat-Nergal! Better known as the Thief of Uruk.”

“Ah, yes,” he said and bowed slightly. He smiled, as if he were very pleased to meet me. “And may I ask your name?”

“Denisha-Ishtar,” I answered.

“Denisha,” he said and eyed me from head to toe. “Nice,” he said and I blushed. “Well, you are young but quite a woman.” He hummed. “I could use someone like you. We could do well together if you joined me in my ventures.”

“A proposition?” I asked. “I’m already self-supporting and lack for nothing. If I continue to do well here in the marketplace, then I may gain a chance to travel the waterways ... perhaps go overseas to places like Meluhha or Ægypt.”

“Ah, yes,” he said and bowed again, “if you do well here.”

“I will have my eye out for you.”

“I understand. I wouldn’t want to hinder your career.”

“And you, Shugat-Nergal?” I asked. “You seem like a decent man in a way. Why not give up your thieving?”

He grinned. “My dear Denisha-Ishtar, for the same reason you won’t want to give up your watching. I’m good at it.”

“I admit that,” I said. “You’ve learned to control yourself very well. You’d make a wonderful actor. You have a kingly appearance. You could handle the lugal’s part in the New Year’s Festival. You’d get to go to bed with Inanna, sleep with the goddess.”

“I’m flattered you think that. But I hardly believe they’d choose me to play the role of one as important as the lugal.”

I shrugged. “In festivities, it’s appearance that counts. Whatever else, you have the appearance. Or you can fake it. Besides, you might become one of Inanna’s favorites.”

“Ah,” he said, “I hear that’s a dangerous thing to do. But, really, I haven’t time to tarry. I must be going.”

“If you don’t quit this life of thievery, Shugat-Nergal,” I warned him, “I’ll eventually catch you with the goods.”

He laughed. “I don’t think so,” he replied. “But we’ll see, Denisha, won’t we?”

Then before I realized what was happening, he grabbed me by the arms and held me to him while he kissed me on the mouth. Pushing me away, he turned, waved goodbye and quickly disappeared into the crowd that filled the marketplace.

I felt embarrassed and put my hand to my throat. Damn! It was gone! That phony son of a bitch. He had snitched my necklace with my personal seal. For a moment, I thought about chasing him so I could scratch his eyes out when I caught him.

But then I thought better of it. My time will come.

THE DIVINE MOTHER

In our time the glorification of the Divine Feminine is of crucial importance. In order to survive and undergo our spiritual rebirth, we have to receive a whole New Gospel from the Divine Mother. In fact, the event of the Second Coming of the Divine Masters and the coming New Gospel from the Divine Mother are two aspects of one and the same mystery - the reality of the New Heaven and the New Earth coming into existence from God the Absolute, the Source of Life.

The New Gospel of the Divine Mother is to help us to bring the Kingdom of God down on Earth and to build life on all levels of Being as a Divine Temple. Emerging from the Source of Life, i.e. the cosmic-spiritual Sun which never sets, the Divine Mother creates life in all realms of the vertical structure of the Universe as a Divine Temple – from the reality of the Holy City, through the various celestial worlds, to the life of humankind on Earth. On Earth she transforms and illuminates the Earth itself, human culture, society, the family, and the life of the individual human being.

On a planetary level the Divine Mother will fill the Four Elements with the vibrations of the Holy Spirit. She will purify, spiritualise and illuminate the whole Earth making it like a 'bride' for the Sun. The etheric layer around the Earth will become a space for the fusion between the celestial Jerusalem and the illuminated Earth. Figuratively speaking, a magnificent etheric Temple will be built upon the whole planet with a gigantic cosmic-spiritual Cross of Light at the centre of the Temple. In this transfigured Earth-Temple all kingdoms of life will be present in Divine Harmony, Wisdom and Truth.

The Divine Feminine archetype is also related to the process of purification, transformation and illumination of matter. By its very essence, this archetype is the printing and the implementation of spiritual ideas in the material world. The Divine Mother will permeate every structure of human life on Earth with the vibrations of Holy Spirit. When we speak about the descent of the Kingdom of God on Earth, it is the universal principle of the Divine Feminine which accomplishes this celestial task.

In the end we have to build our individual life as a Temple as well. When we pass the first and second resurrection helped by the Cosmic Christ within, we build ourselves (all our seven bodies) as a Divine Temple. At the same time, we have to build our life in relation to the family, society, Nature and the Earth as a Divine Temple too. This means that we have to respect the holiness and sacredness of life everywhere, to work for the purification and illumination of the Earth and to develop harmonious and friendly relationships with the people in all areas of our lives. Only then could we pass successfully through all stages of life, from childhood to old age, and build it as a Temple, thus fulfilling the purpose of our incarnation on Earth. For this development of our relationships, the Divine Mother takes constant care with great love, support, tenderness, compassion and provides us with everything we need for our spiritual growth. The Divine Mother, conveying the new creative impulse from the Living God, will help us to transform even our daily life and to build it as a Divine Temple.

The appreciation of life in all levels of Creation as a Divine Temple requires devoted prayers, deep meditation and holy communion with the Divine Mother. Here again we could have many different types of prayer, meditation, holy communion enabling us to enter into her Divine Temple of life. Only through holy communion with the Divine Mother will we appreciate the Earth as our celestial house where we could live in the presence of our Divine Father-Mother forever. Thus the mystery of the Father's house with its many mansions and the mystery of the Earth as our Celestial Mother's House become simply two sides of the same mystery – that of the return to the Kingdom of God and bringing this celestial reality down on Earth.

Each one of the celestial manifestations of the Divine Feminine - Virgin Mary, Mataji, Kuan Yin, the New Eve, Zventa Sventana and others – has her position on the Mandala of the Heavenly Jerusalem , her own universal characteristics, posture, colours, clothes and adornments with special symbolic meaning. These are closely related to and complement the mythological characteristics of her masculine counterpart. Here, however, it is interesting to note that while the male manifestations of the Divine Spirit are Personification(Krishna and his incarnation in our century - Babaji), Realisation (Buddha), Incarnation(Jesus Christ), World Teacherhood(the Master Peter Deunov), Emanation (the Holy Spirit ), the female manifestations take the form of family archetypes – those of Sister (Mataji - the sister of Babaji), Daughter (Kuan Yin and the New Eve), Mother (Virgin Mary),Bride (Zventa Sventana) and others. This is the way in which the feminine manifestations reflect the union between the masculine and the feminine universal principles and reveal the Divine wholeness of Being. As a whole, the Mandala of the Heavenly Jerusalem, which we presented above, includes both manifestations of the Divine Spirit, the masculine and the feminine, in absolute harmony and unity.

It is time for the world to recognize that the struggle against terrorism is not winnable unless adjusted to reality. Terrorism survives because it is a faceless force: it is elusive, ever changing, and capable at will to inject and to extricate itself any time at any place. It is the nearest likeness to all-encompassing hydra.

Reality demands that terrorism be reduced to tangible and practical limits. This can only be accomplished when terrorism is recongized as an exisiting state.

What started out as having fun turned into an obsession and struggle to see how much power they could steal from me and my family through different processes....

With the power of ORMUS and Testosterone and magical SEMEN DNA levels reached 24 strands and it made DEMONIC MONSTERS. Normal DNA levels are 12 strand. To destroy a spirit you need to remove the Chromozones, DNA plus Testosterone levels.

Because they have learned how to time travel they thought this was really great and now the earth's time levels don't make sense.

THE HISTORY OF EARTH
The history of Earth covers approximately 4.567 billion years (4,567,000,000 years), from earth's formation out ot the solar nebula to the present. This article presents a broad overview, summarizing the leading scientific theories. Due to the diffculty of comprehending very large amounts of time, the analogy of a single 24-hour period will be used, beginning exactly 4.567 billion years ago, at the formation of earth, and ending now. Each second of this period represents approximately 53,000 years. The Big Bang and origin of the universe, estimated at occurring 13.7 billion years ago, is quivalent to taking place almost three days ago-two whole days before our clock began to tick.

So they undid what has already happened for their personal gain and created paradoxes that we could not explain in a rational way.

They took us to a new level of reality that was not right. It took away our free will and SPELLBOUND us and them. They got caught in their own messes and couldn't get out either and they were to embarrassed and scarred to tell me.

We were stuck inside someone's mind for an unknown amount of time. I remember watching my plants shadows from the night light and they would move across the room in the dark. She was closing the lid on her box which we were in and this caused this effect.

Also I would walk around the neighborhoods and I noticed in the middle of each block only 1 Porch light would be on. Block after block it was like this. And every yard was perfectly kept. It was like someone was keeping house of the whole town.

It is the ultimate historical continuum vested in all The Americas or NEW BYZANTIUM.

Byzantium-New Rome or Byzantine Empire is today but an ornament on the genealogical tree of history that cannot be repeated¡ªas also are the British, Roman, Alexandrian, Athenian, Persian, Mayan, and Aztec Empires. Yet, their active influence survives.



It is folly and misleading to reason that the Moslem invasion of Central Europe was the consequence of Moslem penetration of the Iberian Peninsula and of the Balkans. Both these events were only symptomatic of a much more fundamental occurrence earlier in history: the ill-conceived and treasonous invasion and devastation by the West itself of Constantinople at the opening of the Thirteenth Century. It is also unfounded to reason that in some way Islam today holds the higher moral ground over Christianity because the women of the West have achieved a more independent and stronger contributory status in society. Why then are Moslem women clamoring for even their basic freedom? The true issue in that quest is not the presence of that freedom but how that freedom is used.

Since its founding, New Rome, or Constantinople, or Byzantium had always been the guardian and protector of the West. It was the rupture of that Western integrity that opened the way for the later Moslem onslaught against Europe.

The Western world committed a grave error once. Today, the same confrontation exists but on a much larger scale, including the interests of progressive Islamic nations. In this instance, America has become the defender of Civilization and thus, New Byzantium. The error must not be repeated. The unity and firm coalition of Western nations together with that of the progressive nations of the world is paramount for the survival of all Civilization.

NEW BYZANTIUM


Much has been written about the Byzantine Empire, the great City of Constantinople, its art, language, culture and customs. Generally, however, and due to the fall of the City in 1453, any reference to the Empire is made in a historical context, and rarely is there an acknowledgment that it exerts any influence at the present time.

Contrary to this perception, the reality is that meaningful and substantial remnants of the Byzantine world are with us today. This is a reasonable consequence of the event marking the fall of the City. Although a political and social disintegration of that society occurred, its rich cultural substance quickly and steadily shifted to various parts of Europe to form the basis of the Renaissance. [For early examples, see: Origins and Coinage].

Three elements comprise the foundation of the Byzantine ideal which more accurately describes the maximum achievement of Western Civilization. These are, Greek culture, the Roman institutional system, and Christianity. In combination, these influences produced a viable social and political system capable of effectively enduring the test of time and tension. Most eminent proof of this is the existence itself of Byzantium which lasted from 330 A.D. to 1453 -- eleven hundred years, longer than any other social-political system in the history of the world.

Alone, these elements, although of profound importance, each lack the necessary quality effectively to lead to the governance of a society. It can be concluded, therefore, that contemporary Western Civilization is the natural sequel of the Byzantine world wherein prevailed the influence of Hellenic culture, the Roman system of laws, and Christianity based on its Hebraic past. Political interests have persistently obscured this reality which at last is beginning to surface in the minds and consciousness of an informed world. Byzantium shall no longer be seen as the exclusive historical domain of just one people, one nation, one culture, or one religious denomination. It is the common possession of the civilized Western world. It is, in fact, the Western civilized world itself.

The expansion of the western European Christian peoples of the Latin Church achieved their maximum geographic outreach at the Pacific coast of northern California near San Francisco. Subsequently, the eastward expansion of the eastern European Christians of the Greek Church by means of Russian monks arrived at the same location. The meeting point of the move northward along the Pacific coastline by the Spanish and that of the Russians southward on the same coastline, essentially marked the termination of the expansion of Western Christian Civilization. San Francisco with its notable hills is reminiscent of both Rome and Constantinople (or Byzantium, or New Rome). Behold then, San Francisco, the NEW BYZANTIUM.

Unlike politically motivated writers would have us believe, Constantine the Great, founder of the Byzantine Empire, achieved the unity rather than the disunity of the Western world. Chief evidence of this, as previously stated, was the extraordinary durability of the New Roman or Byzantine state. By introducing Christianity as the official religion, Constantine reconciled Hellenistic culture with Roman pragmatism on a moral footing to produce the Byzantine ideal. The practical application of that ideal was realized by the function of the triune presence of the City, the authority of the Emperor, and the inspiration of the shared common Faith. The City served as the repository of physical and cultural wealth and as the guarantor of physical existence; the Emperor personified and acted as the authority of the legal, political and military system of the state; the Church served in her role as the perpetuator of the Faith and as the guardian and interpreter of the moral and spiritual values of the society. It must be noted, however, that the continuity of the state was ensured by making the roles of the Emperor and the religious head interchangeable. In the absence of one the other would temporarily assume the duties of the former.

Prior to his death, Constantine delegated to his successors that they should honor and perpetuate his select personal guard of men who had served him faithfully. The monogram of Christ which had appeared to him in the sky just before the battle and subsequent victory outside of Rome against Maxentius in 312 A.D., became the battle sign of his army. His personal guards were appointed the protectors of that symbol known as the Labarum. Constantine's request was later honored, and although Constantinople fell in 1453, the institution of his select guard continues in existence today as the protector of the Labarum, and is known as the Order of Saint Constantine the Great.

Another institution was founded by Constantine in honor of his mother, Helen, commemorating the discovery of the True Cross at a location revealed to her in a series of dreams. The early practice was to give to distinguished persons of the feminine gender a small piece of the Cross encased in a locket. This institution is also preserved to this day at his request, and together with the former are known as The Sovereign Byzantine Order of Saints Constantine the Great and Helen, A.D. 312. Persons in the Order -- an international institution -- are awarded correspondingly the Cross of Saint Constantine and the Cross of Saint Helen in various ranks. It is the world's first dynastic Christian Order and it is headed by the Imperial Family of the Laskaris Komnenos of Constantinople, heirs to that right as confirmed by Act of the Roman Senate (16-V-1525, Lib. Decr. 1515/1526, f. 142).

ERA OF NEW BYZANTIUM

The [said] New Era is rendered by the internal process that is produced in each individual and globally in the whole community. It is an ample and tolerant form of thinking, whereby man is neither come to suffer nor to pay for a bad deed, but to live in harmony in the midst of all and by way of our means. When harmony is broken, emotional and physical disturbances arise that range from sadness to grave illnesses.

Within the New Era, eastern philosophical views and high level psychic manifestations will have preeminence, with absolute respect toward all religious beliefs: all this, in connection with the development of modern electronic equipment and computation and technical resources.

The center of the New Era is in America, in the New Byzantium, in California near San Francisco where the East met with the West: the Russian Orthodox monks with the Castilian Catholic friars.

The words Byzantium and Byzantine were used pejoratively, and in particular by the Franks who in the IV Crusade sacked Constantinople. However, in the past century the investigations in scientific and historical fashion by Germans, English, French, and Russians have fully reappraised Byzantium for its art, literature, customs, and above all for its ecumenical syncretism. From Byzantium derives the Renaissance and from it the Modern Age. Its fall in 1453 originated the discovery of the New World.

Byzantium united the Greek culture, the Latin institutional system of Rome, and monastic Hellenic philosophical Christianity. This system lasted for eleven centuries (from 330 to 1453), more than any other Republic, Crown, or Empire.

As Jaspers[*] affirms in his Origin and Goal of History, there have only been three great civilizations: that of India, of China, and of the West, comprised of and integrating high cultures. The one of the West was born in Asia Minor in the Greek City of Miletus of Ionia with the thinkers and philosophers Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes, followed by the pre-Socratic(s), today much revitalized in the new thinking relative to contemporary Philosophy.

The Greek and Hellenistic cultures form the basis of the culture of Rome, succeeded by II Rome or Byzantium that in turn was attempted to be continued by the two III Romes, the Germanic Roman Empire and that of the Czars of all Russias. Byzantium in the New Era is foretold in the American continent as New Byzantium, not only in California but including the city of Valencia, Venezuela, in view of the secret and magical name of Byzantium or Constantinople, which was: VALENTIA.

An imaginary line drawn from Constantinople traversing the North Pole to Kodiak, Alaska, where the Russian monks founded their first mission on American soil, arriving by their expansion to the fortieth parallel, goes directly from Byzantium to the vicinity of San Francisco, California.

It is time for the world to recognize that the struggle against terrorism is not winnable unless adjusted to reality. Terrorism survives because it is a faceless force: it is elusive, ever changing, and capable at will to inject and to extricate itself any time at any place. Clearly wormhole access is the issue, not insulting Hebrew's about their Reptilian genetic origins. The Hebrew Rabbi's are only equally guilty in not informing their sheep about their ET & Reptilian origins AND quarantine, as the Pope sitting on the pile of gold robbed from the murder of 1/5 the women in Europe/inquisition.

This all fit the Sitchen-esque sense of Niburu the place where the Annunaki brought their gold mining gene splicing operations at Edin. Ea/An's sons Enki vs Enlil (Angry Yalweh) had different ideas about whether to immortalize their Adama (clones), with the Leonine. This Eden-ic Arab/Isreali legacy of the war of the brothers, began BECAUSE THEY CAME FROM DIFFERENT MOTHERS. Their fractal wormhole pointed to different different embedding vectors.

ASHES CONFIRMATION

Another key lecture given at the San Marino conference in March was that by
Vittorio di Cesare, one of Italy's top archaeologists. He started with an
account of the Dead Sea Community at Qumrn and the discovery in 1947 of
the Dead Sea Scrolls, hidden by members of the community in caves in an
attempt to preserve their history and teachings for future generations.

Di Cesare then turned his attention to one scroll in particular. Known to
Hebrew scholars as the Testament of AMRAM, it was written around 200 BC. He
said it concerned two strange beings that appeared to Amram, the father of
MOSES. One was unnamed (although in my translation of the fragmentary text
he is identified as MICHAEL or Melchizedek), while the other was BELIAL,
the teacher of the Children of Darkness. Amram is asked to choose between
the two, who represent, respectively, the truth and the lie. This was a
concept that came originally from the Iranian religion of Zoroastrianism.
It entered the Jewish religion at the time of the Babylonian captivity
following the conquest of Babylon in the mid sixth-century BC by the
Persians under Cyrus the Great. Yet it was the appearance of Belial that di
Cesare focused on. The being is said to have been dark with a VIPER-like
face and "blazing eyes". SERPENTS, he said, are universally associated with
the principles of knowledge and wisdom.

Di Cesare showed next a slide of one of the SNAKE-headed clay figurines
found with frequency by Sir Leonard Woolley alongside burials excavated
during the 1920s at sites in Lower Iraq. Many, for instance, were found in
cemeteries at UR, the former great city identified by scholars as the
biblical "Ur of the Chaldees". Since the level at which these figurines was
found corresponded to the time period in which Iraq was inhabited by the
so-called Ubaid peoples, who came originally from the ZAGROS mountains of
Kurdistan, it meant that they dated to c. 3500 BC (although di Cesare spoke
of them as dating to 6500 BC). Di Cesare said that mystery surrounded the
purpose of the statues, which showed males, females and females holding
babies. He suggested that they were buried in order to protect the souls of
the dead and to prevent the deceased from becoming victims of Vampires, a
common belief among the peoples of ancient Iraq.

Di Cesare saw the Ubaid statues as representations of the same SERPENT-like
figure featured in the Testament of Amram. He went on to propose that these
beings were an actual RACE that lived in the Near East in prehistoric times
and were responsible for providing the knowledge of civilization. All these
matters are dealt with in great detail within my own books FROM THE ASHES
OF ANGELS (1996) and GODS OF EDEN (1998). As you can imagine, I sensed what
only can be described as a slight case of dej vu the same feeling I
experienced when reading Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas book URIEL'S
MACHINE.

I listened carefully as di Cesare turned his attentions to the significance
played by the abstract EYE goddess statues found at a temple site called
Tel Brak in northern Syria. These, he said, were yet another link to the
SERPENT cult. Yet he failed to note that the veneration of the EYE in the
Near East derived from its associations with the vulture, the ultimate
symbol of the Neolithic cult of the dead, which went hand-in-hand with
SERPENTINE symbolism. Di Cesare then showed slides of other "guardian"
statues from Palestine, Syria and even Italy that bore a resemblance to the
Ubaid figurines, suggesting that these were likewise connected with the
same tradition. This is a matter I also deal with in FROM THE ASHES OF
ANGELS, published in Italy in 1997 under the title GLI ULTIMI DEI ("The
Last Gods") by Sperling and Kupfer. In here I point out that the beak-like
faces of these statues, some of which have cobra hoods (and are thus
representations of ASTARTE, the Canaanite form of EVE, the SERPENT mother
of the Nephilim), derive from the earlier association between SERPENTS and
abstract vulture symbolism. Di Cesare went on to show a slide which
featured a group of Mesopotamian figurines that he said were Anunnaki, the
Sumerian pantheon of lesser gods. Like me, he too identified these beings
with the strange figures featured in the Testament of Amram and the Ubaid
SERPENT-faced figurines.

The only topic he subsequently covered which is not in FROM THE ASHES OF
ANGELS was the possible link between the SERPENT-like "GUARDIANS of
knowledge, as he referred to them, and the phallic standing stones found
at many Canaanite and Phoenician sites in Syria and Lebanon (and generally
considered to be symbols of the goddess Asherah). He concluded his lecture
by saying that we have here evidence of a widespread cult which revered an
ancient race, connected with the symbol of "The SERPENT and the EYE" and
thought to be the givers of ancient knowledge and wisdom.

As soon as Vittorio di Cesare came off stage I asked him if he was aware of
my own work on the same subject. From his reaction, this seemed not to be
the case. So I offered to send him Italian translations of both works as
quickly as possible (he has acknowledged receipt of them). Vittorio tells
me that he is preparing a book on the subject to be entitled GODS OF FIRE.
I have offered an introduction and wait intriguingly for new developments
in this area. I am left with the prospect that one of Italy's most eminent
archaeologists has independently confirmed the existence of a previously
unrecognised race connected with serpentine symbolism and the spread of
ancient knowledge. As you will know, this shamanic ruling elite are to be
associated with the Watchers of Enochian/Dead Sea literature (and through
them the angels of Judeo-Christian tradition), the Ubaid statues of Lower
Iraq, the EYE goddesses of ancient Syria and the Anunnaki of Mesopotamian
myth and legend. We must not forget, however, that some of these ideas,
especially the human origin of the Watchers of Eden and the Anunnaki, were
explored originally by Christian O'Brien in his landmark book GENIUS OF THE
FEW, first published in 1985. Yet I believe I was the first writer to
identify the Watchers as a shamanic ruling elite that controlled the spread
of the Neolithic revolution and paved the way for the foundations of
ancient world civilisation.

[edit] Production and usage of a Torah scroll
Manuscript Torah scrolls are still used, and still written, for ritual purposes (i.e. religious services); this is called a Sefer Torah ("Book [of] Torah"). They are written using a painstakingly careful methodology by highly qualified scribes. This has resulted in modern copies of the text that are almost unchanged from millennia old copies. The reason for such care is it is believed that every word, or marking, has divine meaning, and that not one part may be inadvertently changed lest it lead to error. The text of the Torah can also be found in books, which are mass-printed in the usual way for individual use, often containing both the Hebrew text and a translation in the language of publication. For more details on production of ritual scrolls, see the article Sefer Torah.

Printed versions of the Torah in normal book form (codex) are known as a Chumash (plural Chumashim) ("[Book of] Five or Fifths"). They are treated as respected texts, but not anywhere near the level of sacredness accorded a Sefer Torah, which is often a major possession of a Jewish community. A chumash contains the Torah and other writings, usually organized for liturgical use, and sometimes accompanied by some of the main classic commentaries on individual verses and word choices, for the benefit of the reader.

All Torah scrolls are stored in the holiest part of the synagogue in the Ark known as the "Holy Ark" (àÂøåÉï ä÷ÉãùÑ aron hakodesh in Hebrew.) Aron in Hebrew means cupboard or closet and Kodesh is derived from 'Kadosh', or 'holy'.

[edit] The Torah as the core of Judaism

Ashkenazi Torah scrollThe Torah is the primary document of Judaism. According to Jewish tradition it was revealed to Moses by God.

Classical rabbinic writings offer various ideas on when the entire Torah was revealed. The revelation to Moses at Mount Sinai is considered by many to be the most important revelatory event. According to datings of the text by Orthodox rabbis this occurred in 1280 BCE. Some rabbinic sources state that the entire Torah was given all at once at this event. In the maximalist belief, this dictation included not only the "quotes" which appear in the text, but every word of the text itself, including phrases such as "And God spoke to Moses...", and included God telling Moses about Moses' own death and what would happen afterward.

Other classical rabbinic sources hold that the Torah was revealed to Moses over many years, and finished only at his death. Another school of thought holds that although Moses wrote the vast majority of the Torah, a number of sentences throughout the Torah must have been written after his death by another prophet, presumably Joshua. Abraham ibn Ezra and Joseph Bonfils observed that some phrases in the Torah present information that people should only have known after the time of Moses. Ibn Ezra hinted, and Bonfils explicitly stated, that Joshua (or perhaps some later prophet) wrote these sections of the Torah. Other rabbis would not accept this belief.

The Talmud (tractate Sabb. 115b) states that a peculiar section in the Book of Numbers (10:35 — 36, surrounded by inverted Hebrew letter nuns) in fact forms a separate book. On this verse a midrash on the book of Mishle (also called Proverbs) states that "These two verses stem from an independent book which existed, but was suppressed!" Another (possibly earlier) midrash, Ta'ame Haserot Viyterot, states that this section actually comes from the book of prophecy of Eldad and Medad. The Talmud says that God dictated four books of the Torah, but that Moses wrote Deuteronomy in his own words (Talmud Bavli, Meg. 31b). All classical beliefs, nonetheless, hold that the Torah was entirely or almost entirely Mosaic and of divine origin.

In contrast, modern historians conclude that the origin of the Torah indeed came from this time-frame, but developed in different strands, which were eventually redacted together sometime around 400 BCE, the time of Ezra the scribe. These beliefs are accepted as correct by Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist Judaism. Rabbis in these denominations have developed a number of theories about God and revelation which reject a secular interpretation of the documentary hypothesis, accept that the Torah was written by Moses and later prophets under divine inspiration, and which also strive to be in accord with historical consensus.

There is very little support for higher biblical criticism in Modern Orthodox Judaism, and absolutely none in Haredi Judaism and Hasidic Judaism. Applying the techniques of higher criticism to books of the Bible other than the Torah is frowned upon, but applying these techniques to the Torah itself is usually considered to be both mistaken and heretical. As such, the overwhelming majority of Orthodox Judaism believes the documentary hypothesis to be heretical. Orthodox rabbis well-known for taking issue with documentary hypothesis include Meir Leibush Malbim and Samson Raphael Hirsch.


[edit] The divine meaning of even individual words and letters
The Rabbis hold that not only are the words giving a Divine message, but indicate a far greater message that extends beyond them. Thus they hold that even as small a mark as a kotzo shel yod (÷åöå ùì éåã), the serif of the Hebrew letter yod (é), the smallest letter, or decorative markings, or repeated words, were put there by God to teach scores of lessons. This is regardless of whether that yod appears in the phrase "I am the Lord thy God," or whether it appears in "And God spoke unto Moses saying." In a similar vein, Rabbi Akiva, who died in 135 CE, is said to have learned a new law from every et (àú) in the Torah (Talmud, tractate Pesachim 22b); the word et is meaningless by itself, and serves only to mark the accusative case. In other words, the Orthodox belief is that even apparently contextual text "And God spoke unto Moses saying..." is no less important than the actual statement.

One kabbalistic interpretation is that the Torah constitutes one long name of God, and that it was broken up into words so that human minds can understand it. While this is effective since it accords with our human reason, it is not the only way that the text can be broken up.

The Biblical Hebrew language is sometimes referred to as "the flame alphabet" because many devout Jews believe that the Torah is the literal word of God written in fire.

Many Jewish laws are not directly mentioned in the Torah, but are derived from textual hints, which were expanded orally, and eventually written down in the Talmud and the Mishnah. The Rabbinic interpretation of the Oral Laws are called Gemara.

Torah She'Be'al Peh, or Torah of the Mouth

Jewish tradition holds that the Torah has been transmitted in parallel with an oral tradition. Jews point to texts of the Torah, where many words and concepts are left undefined and many procedures mentioned without explanation or instructions; the reader is required to seek out the missing details from the oral sources. For example, many times in the Torah it says that/as you are/were shown on the mountain in reference of how to do a commandment (Exodus 25:40).

According to classical rabbinic texts this parallel set of material was originally transmitted to Moses at Sinai, and then from Moses to Israel. At that time it was forbidden to write and publish the oral law, as any writing would be incomplete and subject to misinterpretation and abuse. However, after persecution and exile, this restriction was lifted when it became apparent that in writing was the only way to ensure that the Oral Law could be preserved.

Around 200 CE, Rabbi Judah haNasi took up the compilation of a nominally written version of the Oral Law, the Mishnah. Other oral traditions from the same time period not entered into the Mishnah were recorded as "Baraitot" (external teaching), and the Tosefta. Other traditions were written down as Midrashim. Over the next four centuries this small, ingenious record of laws and ethical teachings provided the necessary signals and codes to allow the continuity of the same Mosaic Oral traditions to be taught and passed on in Jewish communities scattered across both of the world's major Jewish communities, (from Israel to Babylon).

After continued persecution more of the Oral Law had to be committed to writing. A great many more lessons, lectures and traditions only alluded to in the few hundred pages of Mishnah, became the thousands of pages now called the Gemara. Gemara is Aramaic, having been compiled in Babylon. The Hebrew word for it is Talmud. The Rabbis in Israel also collected their traditions and compiled them into the Jerusalem Talmud. Since the greater number of Rabbis lived in Babylon, the Babylonian Talmud has precedence should the two be in conflict.

Orthodox Jews and Conservative Jews accept these texts as the basis for all subsequent halakha and codes of Jewish law, which are held to be normative. Reform and Reconstructionist Jews deny that these texts may be used for determining normative law (laws accepted as binding) but accept them as the authentic and only Jewish version of understanding the Bible and its development throughout history. (Reform and Reconstructionist, although they reject Jewish law as normative, do not accept the religious texts of any other faith.)

According to Jewish law, when Jewish children reach the age of maturity (12 years for girls, 13 years for boys) they become responsible for their actions. At this point a boy is said to become Bar Mitzvah (Hebrew: בר מצוה, "one (m.) to whom the commandments apply"); a girl is said to become Bat Mitzvah (בת מצוה, "one (f.) to whom the commandments apply")

Before this age, all the child's responsibility to follow Jewish law and tradition lies with the parents. After this age, the children are privileged to participate in all areas of Jewish community life and bear their own responsibility for Jewish ritual law, tradition, and ethics.

[edit] Terminology
It is common in Jewish culture to celebrate the coming-of-age transition. In popular usage, the terms "Bar Mitzvah" and "Bat Mitzvah" are often mistakenly used to refer to the celebration itself; however the term actually refers to the boy or girl. The event is often misunderstood to confer the status of a Jewish adult, but in fact it is merely a celebration of the adulthood that came about automatically by virtue of age. The ceremony itself does not change the status of the celebrant nor does it imbue any additional rights or responsibilities beyond those which were automatically imbued on a boy's 13th (or girl's 12th) birthday.

The term Bar Mitzvah (בר מצוה) is typically translated as "son of the commandment", and Bat Mitzvah (בת מצוה) as "daughter of the commandment". In Biblical Hebrew, however, the word "bar" or "bat" (the latter pronounced "bas" in Ashkenazi Hebrew) could also mean "subject to," e.g., a particular tax, penalty, or obligation; therefore a more accurate translation of the term may actually be "subject to commandment." The plural form term for people of obligation is B'nai Mitzvah (or B'not Mitzvah if all the people are female), though when referring to multiple celebrations, many mistakenly say "Bar Mitzvot" or "Bat Mitzvot."


[edit] Jewish boys
The current way of celebrating one's becoming a Bar Mitzvah did not exist in the time of the Bible, Mishnah or Talmud. This ceremonial observation developed in medieval times.

The current practice is that on a Shabbat shortly after his 13th birthday, a boy may recite the blessings for the Torah reading, read from the Torah (five books of Moses) and Haftara (Selections from the books of the Prophets), and give a d'var Torah, a discussion of that week's Torah portion. One may also lead part or all of the morning prayer services. Calling the boy to say the Torah blessings is called an aliyah (Hebrew: עֲלִיָּה, from the verb alàh, עָלָה, meaning, "to rise, to ascend; to go up"). Precisely what the Bar Mitzvah should lead during the service varies from one congregation to another, and is not fixed by Jewish law. The Sephardic Jews tend to bring the boy into adulthood a little later than Ashkenazi Jews, waiting until after their 14th birthday. Notwithstanding the celebrations, however, males become entirely culpable and responsible for following Jewish law once they reach the age of 13, and have matured physically to the stage where two pubic hairs have grown.[1]

Sometimes the celebration is during another service that includes reading from the Torah, such as a Monday or Thursday morning service, a Shabbat afternoon service, or a morning service on Rosh Chodesh, the new moon. The service is often followed by a celebratory meal with family, friends, and members of the community. In the modern day, the celebration is sometimes delayed for reasons such as availability of a Shabbat during which no other celebration has been scheduled, or the desire to permit family to travel to the event; however, this does not delay the onset of rights and responsibilities of being a Jewish adult, which comes about strictly by virtue of age.

Many Jewish boys do not have a Bar Mitzvah celebration, perhaps because the family is too poor or do not belong to a Synagogue or Shul (a Jewish worship house), or perhaps because they are hidden Jews in the diaspora. In this case the 13th birthday can be considered the child's coming of age. Not having a Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration does not make the child becoming an adult any less of a Jew. Although some people wish to be "Bar Mitzvahed" as an expression of their faith, this has no religious significance. ("Bar Mitzvahed" is an incorrect use of the term as a participle. The proper way to say it is "to become a Bar Mitzvah".)


[edit] Jewish girls
Except in Italy, no ceremony parallel to a boy's Bar Mitzvah ceremony developed for girls before the modern age. The Orthodox Jewish Italian rite for becoming Bat Mitzvah made a great impression on Rabbi Mordecai M. Kaplan, a rabbi who was originally Orthodox, became Conservative, and then became the founder of Reconstructionist Judaism. Through his influence at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, in New York, Jews from all branches of non-Orthodox Judaism learned about and emulated this practice, though at the time most Orthodox rabbis strongly rejected its usage, despite its Italian Orthodox background.

The first public celebration of a Bat Mitzvah happened on March 18, 1922 at the Society for the Advancement of Judaism in New York City for Judith Kaplan, daughter of Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan. As the ceremony became accepted for females as well as males, many women chose to celebrate the ceremony even though they were much older, as a way of formalizing and celebrating their place in the adult Jewish community.

Today, most non-Orthodox Jews celebrate a girl's becoming Bat Mitzvah in the same way as a boy's becoming Bar Mitzvah. All Reform and Reconstructionist, and most Conservative synagogues have egalitarian participation in which women read from the Torah and lead services. Conservative Judaism is pluralistic, and a small percent of Conservative synagogues are still concerned about the halakhic propriety of women reading the Torah portion in public. Many girls in the non-Orthodox movements celebrate becoming Bat Mitzvah at age 13, like the Jewish boys, rather than at the actual age 12.

The majority of Orthodox Judaism rejects the idea that a woman can publicly read from the Torah or lead prayer services. Haredi Jews ("Ultra-Orthodox") are especially opposed; Rabbi Moshe Feinstein has opposed anyone attending a Bat Mitzvah and has referred to the ceremony as hevel, nonsense, while the Sephardic rabbi René Samuel Sirat, who served as Chief Rabbi of France, has also opposed Bat Mitzvah. However, the public celebration of a girl becoming Bat Mitzvah has made strong inway in Modern Orthodox Judaism and in some elements of Haredi Judaism, especially Chabad-Lubavitch. In these congregations women do not read from the Torah or lead prayer services; however Orthodox girls will lecture on a Jewish topic to mark their coming of age, learn a book of Tanakh or seder of Mishnah, recite the verses from other texts (such as the Book of Esther or the Book of Psalms) or prayers from the siddur.


[edit] Jewish "adult" responsibilities
Once a person is Bar or Bat Mitzvah, he or she has the responsibilities of an adult under Jewish law:

He or she is not innocent anymore, and is responsible for his or her own actions (good or bad). Traditionally, the parents of the Bar or Bat Mitzvah give thanks to God that they no longer have to carry the burden of their child's sins.
He or she is eligible to be called to read from the Torah, and to participate in a Minyan (In Orthodox denominations, only males read from the Torah or participate in a Minyan).
He or she is, in theory, legally old enough to be married according to Jewish law.

Instead of reading from the Torah, some Humanist Jews prefer to research, write, and present a research paper on a topic in Jewish history to mark their coming of age. [2] [3]


[edit] Second Bar Mitzvah
Among religious Jews, it is customary for a man who has reached the age of 83 to celebrate a second bar mitzvah, under the logic that a "normal" lifespan is 70 years, so that an 83-year-old can be considered 13 in a second lifetime. This practice is now becoming more common among the less orthodox denominations as well. [4] [5].


[edit] B'nai Mitzvah gifts
As with weddings, sweet sixteen parties, and other life events, it is common to give the Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebrant a gift to commemorate the occasion. Traditionally, common gifts included books with religious or educational value, religious items, writing implements, savings bonds (to be used for the child's college education) or gift certificates [6], [7]. In modern times, gifts of cash are becoming the norm. Because the Hebrew word for "life", ("chai") is also the Hebrew number 18, monetary gifts in multiples of 18 dollars (i.e. $36, $180, etc.) are considered to be particularly auspicious and have become very common, for Bar Mitzvahs as well as for other events such as birthdays. Many B'nai Mitzvah also receive their first tallit from their parents to be used for the occasion.

With an advance notice of six weeks, U.S. citizens can request a White House greeting from the President to commemorate a Bar Mitzvah (among many other life events).


[edit] Criticism of modern B'nai Mitzvah celebrations
The celebratory meals and parties associated with B'nai Mitzvahs have become increasingly elaborate and expensive in recent decades, often rivaling weddings in their extravagance. Many religious leaders and laypeople have expressed concern that these festivities, which they view as excessive, distract from the original purpose of the celebration: the transition from childhood and innocence to adulthood and responsibility. This has given birth to a common modern aphorism: "too much Bar, not enough Mitzvah". This phenomenon may in part result from a desire by Jewish parents to provide a cultural equivalent of the American sweet sixteen party, the Latin American quinceañera, or the Catholic confirmation.

[edit] Classical customs
In traditional Jewish society, from the era of the Talmud up to the enlightenment, social association of the sexes was usually restricted (tzeniut). In Orthodox Jewish communities these social restrictions are still practiced.


[edit] Betrothal from the Mishnah and Talmud
The Mishna describes three ways of contracting betrothal (tractate Kiddushin 1:1):

With money (as when a man hands a woman an object of value, such as a ring or a coin, for the purpose of contracted marriage, and in the presence of two witnesses, and she actively accepts);
Through a shtar, a contract containing the betrothal declaration phrased as "through this contract"; or
By sexual intercourse with the intention of creating a bond of marriage, a method strongly discouraged by the rabbinic sages.
Today only the betrothal ceremony involving the object of value (i.e. the equivalent of "with money"), almost always a ring, is practiced, but the others may be fallen back upon should a halachic dispute occur.

Engagement for marriage was generally brought about by a third person, often a professional match-maker ("shadchan"). The process is called Shidduchim (Hebrew: matches). The shadchan received a "brokerage-fee" fixed by law or agreed upon by custom, as a rule a small percentage of the dowry. It was paid by either of the parties, or each paid one-half, at the betrothal or after the wedding. The rabbi, as a person enjoying special confidence, was also often employed as intermediary. Although the marriage preliminaries were the concern of the parents, their children were not forced into marriage over their objections.


[edit] Marriage ceremony
The marriage ceremony is based on the rules for transfer of property or of rights in antiquity. In marriage, the woman accepts a ring (or something of value) from the man, accepting the terms of the marriage. This is called betrothal, or kiddushin or erusin. A ketubah ("[marriage] contract") is read publicly. Witnesses are required for both the signing of the ketubah and the ceremonies.

At the giving of the ring the groom (chatan) makes a declaration "You are consecrated to me, through this ring, according to the religion of Moses and Israel." Traditionally there is no verbal response on the part of the bride. She accepts the ring on her finger, and closes her hand, signifying acceptance.

Finally the couple are joined in matrimony under the chuppah, in the ceremony of nissuin, symbolizing their setting up house together. Very often the chuppah is made of an outstretched tallit (Jewish prayer shawl), but it can be any sort of canopy.

The ceremony reaches its climax with both the bride and groom drinking wine. The groom then steps on the wine glass to break it. The origin of this custom is shrouded in mystery, and various understandings of this custom exist:

The oldest source seems to be from the Babylonian Talmud, tractate Berakhot 31a; it has a story about the wedding of Rav Ashi's son. When the celebrants began to get carried away, Rav Ashi brought out and broke a crystal glass in front of them. The interpretation by the Tosafot (early medieval Talmudic commentators) is that even during moments of great celebration, one must maintain proper decorum. It may be related to the belief that it is best to temper one's joy, in order to avert inviting bad fortune.
The breaking of the glass represents the Jewish community's continuing sorrow of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem; no celebration is totally complete without the Temple.
Among Kabbalists (adherents of Jewish mysticism), this custom is said to be a reminder of the broken fragments of Creation, and our need to engage in Tikkun Olam, the repairing of the world on a spiritual level.

[edit] Reform and Conservative adaptations
Conservative Judaism and Reform Judaism have created new customs governing the wedding ceremony. Today most non-traditional Jewish women respond by giving a ring to the groom, and recite an appropriate passage, such as the famous verse from the Song of Songs, Ani l'dodi v'dodi Li ("I am for my beloved, and my beloved is for me", Song of Songs 6:3). Objections to the Talmudic formulation center around the idea that marriage is the purchase of a wife by a man.


[edit] The Ketubah
Main article: Ketubah
The ketubah lays out rights of the wife (to monetary payments upon termination of the marriage by death or divorce), and obligations of the husband (providing food, shelter, clothing, and sexual satisfaction to the wife). Due to its overriding importance, it was not written in the Hebrew language, but in Aramaic, the lingua franca of Jews at the time the first Ketubot became standardized.

Orthodox Judaism uses a traditional ketubah based on the forms that have evolved and standardized over the past millennium. There are minor variations between Orthodox groups, but none of major legal or theological difference. While Jews today no longer speak Aramaic, Orthodox ketubot are still written in this tongue. Nowadays many Orthodox ketubot also have translations into English or other vernacular languages.


[edit] Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist changes
Conservative Judaism uses a traditional ketubah, but has incorporated two changes. Aramaic ketubot (pl.) are still used, but since Hebrew has been reborn as a living language, an official Hebrew version of the Ketubah is now sometimes used. A second change is that a new paragraph is allowed as an option as a "prenuptial agreement"; this paragraph includes a directive that if the couple ever gets a civil (non-religious) divorce, they must go to a Bet Din ("[rabbinical] court") and follow its directives, which tells the husband that he must give his wife a get, a Jewish divorce. This known as the "Lieberman Clause."

The Reform and Reconstructionist movements use both more equalized versions of the ketubah, and also use documents that are essentially not a ketubah at all, but rather a new form of wedding celebration document.


[edit] Chuppah
Main article: Chuppah

An elaborate chupahA chuppah (also spelled huppa, chupah, or chuppa - plural chuppot) is a canopy traditionally used in Jewish weddings. It consists of a cloth or sheet — sometimes a tallit ("prayershawl") — stretched or supported over four poles, and is sometimes carried by attendants to the ceremony location. It is meant to symbolize the home which the couple will build together.

A traditional chuppah, especially within Orthodox Judaism, recommends that there be open sky exactly above the chuppah. If the wedding ceremony is held indoors in a hall, sometimes a special opening is built to be opened during the ceremony. Many Hasidim prefer to conduct the entire ceremony outdoors.

In a spiritual sense, the covering of the chuppah represents the presence of God over the covenant of marriage. As a man's kipa (skull cap) served as a reminder of the Creator above all, (also a symbol of separation from God), so the chuppah was erected to signify that the ceremony and institution of marriage has divine origins.

Before going under the chuppah the groom, amidst joyous singing of the guests, covers the bride's face with a veil. This ceremony is called Badeken or Bedekung, and is at least 600 years old. The origin of this tradition is in the dispute of what exactly is the chuppah. There are opinions that the chuppah means covering the bride's face, and that by this covering the couple is getting married. This opinion is based on the Verse: “[T]hen she took her veil and covered herself.” (Genesis, 24, 65) in which Rebekah meets Isaac. Some are strict to make sure that the witnesses will see the covering, for them to actually be considered as witnessing the marriage.


[edit] Ritual purity in family life

The Laws of "Family Purity" (taharas hamishpacha) have always been a pre-requisite of the Orthodox Jewish marriage. This requires a knowledge of the menstrual Niddah laws which all Jewish brides and grooms should have studied prior to the wedding.


[edit] Controversy over intermarriage
The Jewish concept of marriage is based on kiddushin (sanctification). The wife and husband are publicly sanctified to each other in an exclusive relationship. The rules regarding such sanctification, by definition, are for a relationship between the Jews. The Jewish declaration of marriage includes the phrase that the marriage is being carried out by the laws of Moses and Israel; such a declaration has no meaning for a marriage ceremony between a Jew and a gentile. If any such marriage is carried out Jews are aware of the civil legitimacy of such a ceremony, but accord it no religious legitimacy.


[edit] Civil versus religious marriages, and inter-faith marriages
There is an ongoing debate about inter-faith marriage in especially the Jewish community. Orthodoxy argues from the biblical prohibition on the ancient Israelites against permitting their children to marry the children of gentiles (Deuteronomy 7:3); Moses warns that on transgression, their children will follow other gods, and they themselves will consequently be destroyed. Some traditionalists speak metaphorically of intermarriage in the modern era as a "Silent Holocaust." Modernists see inter-faith marriages as a contribution to a multicultural society that enriches lives. Children from intermarriages identify as Jewish significantly less frequently than children of marriages with two Jewish partners.[citation needed]

According to the National Jewish Population Survey 2000-01, only 17 percent of marriages involving Jews in the United States prior to 1970 were intermarriages. From 1996-2001, 47 percent of marriages involving Jews in the United States were intermarriages. Overall, the U.S. rate of intermarriage for all married Jewish couples is 31 percent.

All branches of Orthodox Judaism, both Haredi and non-Haredi and Conservative Judaism refuse to accept any validity or legitimacy of intermarriages. Conservative Judaism maintains the traditional understanding of Jewish identity. A Jew is someone who was born to a Jewish mother, or who converts to Judaism in accordance with Jewish law and the Mosaic tradition. The Conservative movement thus rejects patrilineal descent. Conservative Judaism does not allow intermarriage. However, the Leadership Council of Conservative Judaism has a more nuanced understanding of this issue than Orthodoxy. In a press release it has stated that "In the past, intermarriage...was viewed as an act of rebellion, a rejection of Judaism. Jews who intermarried were essentially excommunicated. But now, intermarriage is often the result of living in an open society....If our children end up marrying non-Jews, we should not reject them. We should continue to give our love and by that retain a measure of influence in their lives, Jewishly and otherwise. Life consists of constant growth and our adult children may yet reach a stage when Judaism has new meaning for them. However, the marriage between a Jew and non-Jew is not a celebration for the Jewish community. We therefore reach out to the couple with the hope that the non-Jewish partner will move closer to Judaism and ultimately choose to convert. Since we know that over 70 percent of children of intermarried couples are not being raised as Jews...we want to encourage the Jewish partner to maintain his/her Jewish identity, and raise their children as Jews."

Reform Judaism and Reconstructionist Judaism do not accept the Halakha (Rabbinical Jewish law) as normative, so technically they do not have firm rules against it. Therefore, under certain circumstances that must be discussed with the rabbi beforehand, many Reform and Reconstructionist rabbis will officiate at a marriage between a Jew and a gentile, as long as the couple agrees to certain conditions. These conditions usually state that the couple must raise the children as Jewish and provide them with some sort of formal Jewish education.

THE SONG OF SONGS

These are the songs that will be played for all Weddings in our New Divine Temple.

The Song of Songs is really two love stories: the story of two lovers, and the story of their love for the Earth. Drawing inspiration from nature, they invent a metaphorical language to express their delight in each other's beauty, grace, and vigor. In the process, they become poetic embodiments of the land and its life.

My love is a gazelle, a wild stag.
There he stands on the other side
of our wall, gazing
between the stones.

Your breasts are two fawns,
twins of a gazelle,
grazing in a field of lilies.

But there is more than metaphor in the ability of these two lovers to flow magically from shape to shape. Their fluidity arises from the author's sense of connectedness with the web of life. The Song is an articulation of the primordial religion of love and wonder, and the experience of mystical union. Genuine love for another has the potential to lead us into the most profound communion with nature and its Source, sweeping away the illusion of separateness and uniting Heaven and Earth in a primordial sacred marriage.

This union is beautifully illustrated in verses 4:1 through 5:1, where the young woman's body is portrayed "as a mountainous landscape teeming with animal life." (1) Suddenly she emerges from this landscape, and we find her standing with her lover on a mountain peak, in the rocky domain of wild animals. Sensing danger, he urges her to return with him to the valley, and, after following him down, she melts, once again, into the landscape. A "fresh-running" stream traces their path from that panoramic vista in the mountains to a secret garden in the valley, thus bridging the gap between Heaven and Earth. This stream brings life-giving water from the sky and surges like a fountain in the Earth's fertile recesses. As they make love, she is both the woman in the garden and the garden itself.

This metaphor is a familiar one in the native American spiritual tradition, evoking the lovemaking of Mother Earth and Father Sky. It is an archetypal image, and here in the Song of Songs, it conveys the experience of two lovers who have dissolved each other's boundaries, and spilled out into the world around them, merging with the land and its life; merging with nature and its androgynous Source. Thus their lovemaking is interwoven with that of Mother Earth and Father Sky - who comes to Earth in the wind and the rain that streams down from the mountains:

Your branches are an orchard
of pomegranate trees heavy with fruit,
flowering henna and spikenard,
spikenard and saffron, cane and cinnamon,
with every tree of frankincense,
myrrh and aloes,
all the rare spices.

You are a fountain in the garden,
a well of living waters
that stream from Lebanon.


Awake, north wind! 0 south wind, come,
breathe upon my garden,
let its spices stream out.
Let my lover come into his garden
and taste its delicious fruit.

I have come into my garden,
my sister, my bride,
I have gathered my myrrh and my spices,
I have eaten from the honeycomb,
I have drunk the milk and the wine.

Song of Solomon 4:13 - 5:1

Then I went down to the walnut grove
to see the new green by the brook,
to see if the vine had budded,
if the pomegranate trees were in flower.

And oh! before I was aware,
she sat me in the most lavish of chariots.

Song of Solomon 6:11 - 6:12

Come, my beloved,
let us go out into the fields
and lie all night among the flowering henna.

Let us go early to the vineyards
to see if the vine has budded,
if the blossoms have opened
and the pomegranate is in flower.

There I will give you my love.

The air is filled with the scent of mandrakes
and at our doors
rare fruit of every kind, my love,
I have stored away for you.

Paradise Lost

"The Song of Songs is a poem about the sexual awakening of a young woman and her lover. In a series of subtly articulated scenes, the two meet in an idealized landscape of fertility and abundance - a kind of Eden - where they discover the pleasures of love."

The Song recalls for us the first flush of love and eros, but it goes beyond that to link this experience with the primordial religion of love and wonder. Its paradisiacal "landscape of fertility and abundance" is more than a poetic daydream. Like the writings of Hesiod, citing legends of the time before the Achaeans and the Dorians brought the god of war to Greece, it may actually preserve a memory of the comparative peace and prosperity of the Neolithic period of human history. Contemporary historians and archaeologists have been uncovering evidence that tends to confirm these ancient stories:

"...new archaeological discoveries, coupled with reinterpretations of older excavations, support the view that there were in our prehistory more peaceful societies. In extensive excavations of early European Neolithic settlements that had regular trade and other contact with one another, there are few signs of destruction through warfare or of fortifications. Moreover, there is in the rich art of the Neolithic a (to us) remarkable lack of scenes of men killing each other in "heroic " battles, and of men raping women."

"[The Song of Songs contains] important clues to an earlier time when, far from being a male "sex object," woman was seen as the conduit for what in Indian sacred writings is called the kundalini: the powerful divine energy from whence comes both life and bliss."

The Song of Solomon was set in its final form some 300 years before the birth of Christ, and it preserves elements that are much older - rooted in a time when our sacred role in the renewal of life was thought to be the very heart of religion. For more than a thousand years the Song has been treated as an allegory representing the soul's love for God and God's love for his chosen people. Contemporary commentators are more likely to treat it as a collection of secular love poems, but this secularism is anachronistic, and unlikely in a pre-scientific age. No author composes poetry in a cultural vacuum---outside any context of spiritual tradition or cosmology---and clues to this cosmology can be found within the poem itself. The Song's central metaphor - in which a woman's body is described as a garden, or a vineyard, or "a mountainous landscape teeming with animal life" - fits perfectly with the ancient belief that "Mother Earth" is the visible body of the Source of Life. This maternal aspect of God has been at least partially preserved in the Jewish and Christian mystical traditions:

"What does God do all day long? He gives birth. From the beginning of eternity God lies on a maternity bed giving birth to the All. God is creating this whole universe, full and entire, in this present moment."

Meister Eckhart lived in a time when a doctor of the church had to choose his words carefully, or risk being burned at the stake. By contrast, the author of the Song grew up in a culture that took God's maternity for granted. In that context, it would have been quite natural for a young woman who was crossing the border from childhood to motherhood to identify with the maternal Source of Life and imagine herself as a garden of Earthly delights for her lover's pleasure. Unified in purpose with Mother Nature, the Song's Juliet shares her Mother's awesome power to bring new life into the world. So deep is her sense of participation in this power that she even seems to be able to command the wind. By Nature's alchemical magic, she draws her lover to her side:

Awake, north wind! O south wind, come,
breathe upon my garden,
let is spices stream out.

Let my lover come into his garden
and taste its delicious fruit.

Charged with Nature's passion for the renewal of life, she draws her Romeo more deeply into the story of the Earth.

The Wedding of Heaven and Earth

In the literature of "bridal mysticism," medieval mystics used the erotic language of the Song of Solomon to describe their ecstatic union with Jesus. Christian mystics - like the mystics of other spiritual traditions - discovered that, at the root of all, there is one unifying Self:

"The eye with which I see God is the same eye with which God sees me: my eye and God's eye are one eye, one seeing, one knowing and one love."

Speaking from the same vista of consciousness, Jesus said, "I am the vine and you are the branches."

In the Western spiritual tradition, the experience of connectedness with nature and continuity with its Source is usually associated with self-denial and disciplined prayer or meditation. But in the Song of Solomon this insight is charged with eros, reflecting the author's awareness that it can arise, at times, in a sexual context, as a result of deeply felt, selfless love - which is, after all, a way of transcending one's own limited sense of self. As Alan Watts pointed out in an exposition of Tantric yoga, selfless love can sometimes sweep away the illusion of separateness:

"...in an embrace of this kind, all considerations of time and place, of what and who, drop away ... and the pair discover themselves as the primordial 'love that makes the world go round.' There is an extraordinary melting sensation ... and, 'seeing their eyes reflected in each other's, they realize that there is one Self looking out through both... The conceptual boundary between male and female, self and other, dissolves, and--as every spoke leads to the hub--this particular embrace on this particular day discloses itself as going on forever, behind the scenes."

Wedding the Land

In the matriarchal societies of the ancient Near East, and during the transition to patriarchy, kingship was conferred by wedding the high priestess, which was a symbolic way of wedding the Earth herself - the maternal Source of life. We find a reference to this rite in verse 3:11. Notice that it is Solomon's mother who provides the crown, and his wife who provides the occasion.

Come out, O daughters of Zion,
and gaze at Solomon the King!
See the crown his mother set on his head
on the day of his wedding,
the day of his heart's great joy.

By wedding the land, the king became the shepherd of his kingdom and accepted the priviledge and responsibility of stewardship. This is an idea that needs to be reinvented for the 21st century. We are living in a perilous time, and the Earth is in dire need of responsible stewardship.

When two people fall in love and start a family, they affirm the beauty and essential goodness of this world. By blessing the Earth with children, we participate in the renewal of this unique human way of experiencing and exploring the universe. We co-create the world with God. We marry the land. As in the ancient rite of sacred marriage, a contemporary wedding presents an opportunity for two lovers to declare this affirmation of human life. And, for those who care deeply about the Earth and her distress, it presents an opportunity to declare their love and commitment, not only to each other but to their children and grandchildren.

In these perilous times, when human beings have the power to completely destroy the biosphere and abort all life on this planet, a wedding ceremony takes on a whole new meaning. Our species has been almost too successful in the long battle for survival, and we have yet to learn how to live in harmony with nature, and manage the Earth's finite resources in a way that is wise and sustainable. Our sacred role in the regeneration of life - considered by our Neolithic ancestors to be the very heart of religion - has, in fact, become absolutely critical for the preservation of life on Earth.

Christians have a vital role to play in this much needed healing. As Mark Wallace put it in his essay, "The Green Face of God," the Christian spiritual tradition is the "the pharmakon of looming environmental disaster." Christianity is, in part, "both the cause of the problem and its solution."

"Lynn White, in a now famous essay, writes that Western Christianity's attack on paganism effectively stripped the natural world of any spiritual meaning by replacing the belief that the Sacred is in rivers and trees with the doctrine that God is a disembodied Spirit whose true residence is in heaven, not on earth.

The impact of Christianity's antipagan teachings has tended to empty the biosphere of any sense of God's presence in natural things.

But if the root of the environmental problem is deeply spiritual or religious at its core, it is also the case, ironically, that a partial answer to the problem lies in a rehabilitation of the earth-friendly teachings within the spiritual traditions that seem most hostile to nature, namely, the Christian tradition.

Christianity, then, is the pharmakon of looming environmental disaster: in part, it is both the cause of the problem and its solution. It is both the origin of the ecocidal "disease" from which we suffer and its "cure," insofar as it provides resources for

"Anna (the name of the Mother of the Virgin Mary) . . . is derived from the Chaldean Ana" (SD 1:91).



In the Hindu pantheon a cognate is Annapurna (a name of Devi-Durga, wife of Siva), meaning "full of food" -- the fecund mother, the "Astral Light in one of its multitudinous aspects" (SD 1:92).

Damkina: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Ea, Hea

Ea or Hea (Akkadian, Chaldean) (from house + water)



One of the three chief gods of the Chaldaeo- or Assyro-Babylonian celestial triad of Anu, Bel, and Ea. In the division of the universe into heaven, earth, and water, Ea is king of the watery deeps (Shar Apsi); also Lord of that which is below (En-Ki).



Ea is figured as a man covered with the body of a fish, thus resembling Oannes and Dagon. Marodach and Marduk are also aspects of this same deity. His consort is Damkina (lady of that which is below) or Damgal-nunna (great lady of the waters). Ea is called the god of wisdom, and one of his titles, the Sublime Fish, points directly to his cosmic aspect as the ever-living spirit of and bearer of consciousness in the spatial deeps.



"The waters are a symbol of wisdom and of occult learning. Hermes represented the sacred Science under the symbol of fire; the Northern Initiates, under that of water" (SD 2:495n).
